Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic form of asana practice linking postures with a full rhythmic breathing. this is a demanding but rewarding practice for those liking a challenge physically and mentally.
At Yogasala our morning classes are self practice.
This is the traditional way of learning the Ashtanga Yoga system and is the way that Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught in Mysore - hence the name ‘Mysore Style’ which is often used to describe this type of class. In a self practice class each student works at his or her own pace with assistance and adjustment from the teacher as and when necessary - almost like a private lesson in a class situation.
The Ashtanga series’ are learnt and committed to memory asana by asana, with new poses being added as and when the student is ready, so that most of the time the student works without being ‘led’ by the teacher. Self practice classes therefore always have students of mixed abilities working side by side and complete beginners to the practice are welcome.
How do I start?
If you are completely new to Ashtanga or yoga in any form your first practices will be quite short. You might like to come along and watch some of the other students from the reception side of Yogasala to get an idea of the practice and join in towards the latter part of the session.
You will be guided from the moment you roll out your mat and all the poses and sun salutes will be shown to you. Most importantly we will try not to overload you in the early days as it is purely by practice we make progress and it is not wise to strain for short term gain.
Primer Plus Students
For students enrolled in the course you will run through the sequence to the point reached in the previous day of the course. As you revise the postures let the flaws stand out and simply try to be true to your breath flow. We can pick up on the details in the workshop but would rather you gain confidence and a feel for the practice in the mornings. Remember that the major premise of the course is that you will be able to practise on your own at the end of it.
Principal teacher William has been practising Ashtanga for nearly fifteen years and has a weight of experience to pass on to you. We are the only studio specialising in this form of yoga in Northern Thailand and we pride ourselves on our reputation for excellance in this field.
